The Premier used an updated version of the oath sworn by the first Basque Premier, José Antonio Aguirre, in an emotional event marked by the restrictions due to the Covid-19 pandemic
Iñigo Urkullu was sworn in as Basque Premier this morning under the Tree of Gernika, using an updated version of the oath of office used by the first Basque Government Premier and fellow Basque Nationalist Party member, José Antonio de Aguirre y Lekube, on 7 October 1936. The event took place in the presence of all the members of the Basque Parliament, gathered together at the Meeting House in Gernika to witness the solemn occasion, and by numerous representatives of Basque institutions including Bakartxo Tejeria (Speaker of the Basque Parliament), Unai Hualde (Speaker of the Parliament of Navarre), María Chivite (Premier of Navarre), Ana Otadui (Chair of the General Assembly of Bizkaia) and the General Deputies of Bizkaia, Araba and Gipuzcoa: Unai Rementeria, Ramiro González and Markel Olano, respectively. The Basque Nationalist Party was represented by the chair of its Governing Council, Andoni Ortuzar. The event was marked by the restrictions imposed due to the health emergency arising from the Covid-19 pandemic.
