Izaskun Bilbao Barandica takes the judgement to Brussels that gives priority to foreign languages over Basque in public examinations in Navarre

The EAJ-PNV MEP, Izaskun Bilbao Barandica, whose candidacy was supported by Geroa Bai in the Coalition for a Solidary Europe, presented an initiative in which she urged the European Commission to decide whether giving priority to foreign languages over Basque in public examinations in Navarre is compatible with the respect for linguistic and cultural diversity enshrined in the EU Charter of Fundamental Rights.

The jeltzale representative in Strasbourg thus took the content of the controversial judgement issued yesterday by the Navarre High Court of Justice to Brussels, the content of which she considered “radically incompatible” with the European ‘acquis’ on the protection of diversity in general and linguistic diversity in particular. The Basque MEP also stressed that she would pass the content of this judgement on to Francois Alfonsi, rapporteur of the European baseline report on the protection of minoritised languages, with a view to looking at new actions regarding the content of the judgement.
