Xabier Arzalluz Antia, the historic Basque nationalist leader and the EBB’s chairman on two separate occasions over a twenty-year period, has died on 28 February 2019 aged 86 at his home in the town of Galdakao in Bizkaia. Arzalluz’s passing has caused a profound feeling of sorrow among the nationalist men and women that make up EAJ-PNV. As soon as they heard the news, the party’s leaders, the jeltzaleak, expressed their grief over the loss of the inimitable and irreplaceable leader of the nationalist movement, abertzalismo, in Euskadi-The Basque Country. Goian Bego Xabier Arzalluz, RIP.

The current chairman of the EBB, Andoni Ortuzar, has expressed his sadness over the passing of Xabier Arzalluz, who has meant “everything in the Basque Country and everything in the Basque National Party. He has been a professional stalwart as a lawyer, an outstanding politician, and above all a giant among nationalists, abertzaleak. He was part of a generation that built this modern and advanced Euskadi that we now know and enjoy today”. In Ortuzar’s own words, the greatest tribute we can pay “to Arzalluz and all those that helped to build this Euskadi-The Basque Country is to continue their work and advance toward our country’s freedom, which is what Xabier Arzalluz always fought and struggled for”. The EBB’s chairman has sent “our deepest sympathies and most heartfelt condolences to his entire family. The Basque National Party’s political family is now in mourning”.
